Types of intestinal worms that dogs become contaminated with:
Tapeworm
- Flea control is an indispensable part of preventing tapeworm.
Hookworms
- Hookworms are real small worms that have curved mouth parts that burrow into your dog's intestinal wall and absorb blood. They can cause anemia, black/bloody diarrhea and occasionally death in pups. Diagnosis is made by analyzing the stool for eggs under a microscope.
- Most oftentimes found in humid tropic areas. Can infect humans.
Roundworms
- Dogs can become base with roundworms by though-provoking infected lizards, mice, birds and other prey. Pups can be contaminated by their mothers. They can also get contaminated from absorbing soil contaminated by infected stool. If your pup vomits up a worm there's a good chance it's a roundworm. Roundworms will look like spaghetti in the pups stool.
- Roundworms can be passed around to humans and children are the most at risk.
Whipworm
- Frequently hard to diagnose from a stool sampling. Chronic weight loss might be a symptom of whipworm collectively with stool that has a cover of mucous.
- Whipworms are not passed on to humans.
Additional types of worms:
- Heartworm
- Ringworm. Ringworm is in reality not a worm but merely a fungus that affects the skin.
What worming medication should I use for my pup/dog?
Ask your veterinarian for the best worm medicine for your dog or pup. Worm medications come in many forms such as tablets, and pastes. Microscopic testing of your dog's stool may be a requirement.
